SIMON ROWLAND-JONES : Trio Jacquin (2013) for piano, clarinet and viola
Con brio – Adagio – Tempo I
Lento
Allegretto – Lento
The Trio Jacquin derives its name from the Jacquin family, who were close friends of Mozart’s in Vienna. It was for Franziska Jacquin that Mozart composed his ‘Kegelstatt Trio’, probably the first work (and to this this day the most notable one) ever written for the combination of piano, clarinet and viola. It was also written out of admiration for the Jacquin Trio to whom the work is dedicated and who premièred it at the North Norfolk Music Festival on 27th August 2013.
The three movements are played without a break and, although the basic plan is FAST – SLOW – FAST, within each movement there are markedly contrasting sections. The trio is very freely composed and emerged in stages, not in its final order but more like a jigsaw, over the first few months of 2013.
